PTK: High Shear Mixer

Wet granulation involves mixing dry powders (consisting of excipients and active pharmaceutical ingredients) in a mixing vessel with a liquid binding agent. The action of the slowly-rotating impeller blade and the faster rotating chopper blade in conjunction with the liquid binder causes the wet mass to agglomerate into granules.

Since wet granulation is a batch process, the amount of material that can be processed in a given batch is dependent on the size of the mixing bowl. Our line of PTK mixer granulators come in a wide range of sizes, from an R&D unit with small bowl with a 1.2 liter working capacity to production granulators with a working bowl volume of approximately 1,200 liters (approx. 600 Kg capacity.)

Product contact parts on all our granulators are constructed of type 316 stainless steel with a mirror finish as standard. Non-product contact exterior surfaces are of brushed type 304 stainless steel. The control systems available are dependent upon the customer’s specified level of system functional control and the sophistication level of data collection and analysis to be performed by the control system.

For small batch formulation development purposes we offer the PTK PM-C series high shear granulator. This granulator features interchangeable bowls and is mounted on a stainless steel cabinets with castors for mobility and a variety of options to fit your needs.

The PTK high shear mixer granulators can be provided with a wide variety of mechanical options, such as bowl jackets, lighted bowl, liquid binder preparation systems, heater/chiller units, vacuum loading, WIP and other features. The available control systems selected range from simple PLC-based pushbutton controls to fully automated PLC based systems with touchscreen HMIs. The automated systems can be offered in full compliance with 21 CFR Part 11 and GAMP IV requirements, including the required documentation.
